what frame do you have, and how much are you wanting to spend?
on the cheap end there is the dmr stuff, you can get just a roller that tightens your chain around the front ring which shoul do the job

got a saracen zen 1 frame dont mind spending 20-30 quid

truvativ box guide for sure.
ive ran mine on my santa cruz for 3 years and never dropped a chain. stricitly speaking its the cheapest part on my bike (like qualitywise), yet lasted just about the longest.
40 quid or somethin they are.

he rides a zen, pretty sure that doesnt have ISCG, which means he's gonna need a BB mount, thats an extra £15ish and can pose problems with the boxguide. Because the box guides are a two peice chain device its thicker around the ISCG tab than many other devies and can cause a lot of problems with cranks, its one I encountered when fitting my box guide on my kona, now i just run the lower roller part and havnt had any problems
Just something might need checking out

yeah I know how to modify box guide to fit most cranks.
I've had to twice, but I can easily explain it to him by pm, or even help him if need be. it's not too hard.
the only cranks ive seen that straight up dont work with the box guide is the dmr cheiftrains, but they are poorly desgined, and shouldn't really ever be used with gears lol.
